The City of Galax is delighted to announce that it has been awarded over $2,000,000 in a grant award from the Commonwealth Transportation Board on June 19, 2019 for a sidewalk construction project. The grant provides for a nearly one mile of sidewalk on East Stuart Drive, US 58, from Larkspur Lane to Hanes Road along with ramps and signalized pedestrian controls at traffic intersections.
The City was awarded full funding for the sidewalk and related pedestrian controls on East Stuart Drive. This new grant allows the City to make substantial construction improvements along this route, addressing pedestrian safety issues for citizens that walk along E. Stuart Drive. The project will be fully funded by the VDOT Smart Scale Program with no local match of funds. As part of the new method of distribution of projects, funds will be available to start the project in 2023.
Since 2011, the City of Galax has aggressively pursued grants for various projects and have been successful in grant awards totaling over $19 million dollars. Grant funds have been used for building new infrastructure, new programs, staffing, equipment, and training.
