The City of Galax is pleased to announce that it has received three grant awards totaling approximately $500,000.  Mount Rogers Planning District Commission has awarded $100,000 for the construction of water and wastewater infrastructure in the Galax Bottom Area Neighborhood Eastview Revitalization taking place near Meadow and Eastview Streets.  This grant will be matched to other state grant funds received from the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Virginia Department of Transportation. The City is in the midst of another multi-year grant award for the Bottom Area Neighborhood Revitalization which rehabilitates or reconstructs housing, improves commercial facades, as well as significantly upgrading water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.

Additionally, the Virginia Department of Transportation has awarded two new paving grants to the City totaling almost $400,000. The first is on East Stuart Drive for the eastbound lanes from Gillespie Lane approximately one-half mile east.  A second paving award is for both northbound and southbound lanes on Main Street from East Stuart Drive to South Main Street near Bartlett Street, also approximately one-half mile. The City will bid this work in conjunction with their yearly paving contracts in order to achieve the best overall price for all paving projects.

These new grant awards permit the City to make substantial construction improvements for a higher quality of life without cost to taxpayers.  Since 2011, the City of Galax has aggressively pursued grants for various projects and have been successful in grant awards totaling over $17 million dollars.  Grant funds have been used for building new infrastructure, new programs, staffing, equipment, and training.
