Safe Routes to School is a grassroots program funded by VDOT, FHWA, and U.S. DOT.
Galax City Safe Routes to School promotes a long-term healthy lifestyle by encouraging students to walk and bike to school. It’s a perfect way for students to get out and get exercise and for parents to set a wonderful example in leadership and healthy living for their children.
The Safe Routes to School Program offers Pedestrian Safety Training to students, civic and church groups, and any group wanting to know how to walk safely through Galax. There we answer important questions such as:
- Do you walk with traffic or facing traffic?
- While riding a bicycle, do you stop for pedestrians?
- Are you teaching your children the right rules of the road to keep them safe?
FAMILY STROLL AND ROLL DAY
Help celebrate Walk to School Day, Wednesday, October 4th, by joining us at 7 a.m. at the Galax Fire Department. Walk or bicycle ride with the students as they make their way to the Galax schools. The school class with the largest number of participants wins lunch! T-shirts will also be given out.
SIDEWALKS, SIGNS, AND SAFETY. OH MY!
Safe Routes hears concerns about sidewalks and crosswalks that need attention. Now is your opportunity to see what improvements are to be done in the next few years. Join us on Wednesday, September 20th, 6 p.m. at the Galax High School Cafeteria. This meeting includes activities and exercises for both parents and students to do! Fun and learning together.
JINGLE BELLS BIKE RIDE
Get in the Christmas spirit by decorating your bicycle with bells, holly or wrapping paper and join us Friday, December 1st, 3:30 Dannelly Park for a New River Trail Ride to Chestnut Falls and back. Santa loves to ride, too, and will show up! Best decorated bike wins presents.
